Welcome to my website. I’m Dr Julia Fowler – long-time teacher, lecturer and private tutor. I offer bespoke one-to-one online tuition in English at (i)GCSE and A-Level / International Baccalaureate.
Echoing my student’s words above, I want teenagers to know they ‘can do it’. Helping them build their self-esteem, self-knowledge and self-confidence is as much part of my job as helping them boost their exam grades. Of course the two are usually linked.
I’ve taught an array of English and Literacy-related subjects since the 1980s, at GCSE, A-Level and Undergraduate levels, as well as supporting students in the areas of dyslexia and basic literacy. Privately, I’ve taught teenagers and adults to read from scratch; started non-English-speaking women on their journey to fluency; written and delivered courses in communication and assertiveness.
I help students to become independent learners, thoughtful critics, confident writers – and, of course, to master specific exam techniques. My one-to-one tutoring gives students the time and mental space to consolidate their school learning, explore ideas and challenges that they may not have the confidence or opportunity for during busy school lessons. I see my role as supporting and extending a student’s school learning, and am happy to communicate with teachers if required.
My teaching experience, together with my academic background – English Language and Literature (BA Hons), and pragmatic linguistics (PhD) – means I can identify areas of difficulty, and focus intervention on it. My advanced studies are especially relevant to A-Level English Language, and to the generally increased attention to grammar throughout the UK National Curriculum.
Educational goalposts are never static, so I ensure I’m up-to-date with English syllabi in all GCSE, iGCSE and AS/A-Level examination boards. I attend exam board training events and language conferences, and subscribe to or am a member of professional bodies such as Teachit, English and Media Centre, Englicious, National Association for the Teaching of English, and UK Literacy Association. I have an enhanced DBS certificate.
A British national, I’ve also lived in Germany and the USA. I know French, German and Spanish (none of them well, but I like to try…). Living in different countries, together with my academic work on cultural and language issues, means I have significant multicultural sensitivity, which plays into my holistic approach to my students.
I started this piece with thanks from one of my students, and I’ll close with one of her memories of my methods. Do get in touch with me if you’d like to know more about how I might support your child – whether or not that entails acting out Shakespeare…
